Tar Heels Add Six Swimming Recruits for 2008-09

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Head coach Rich DeSelm announced Tuesday that the North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving team has completed its recruiting for the class entering Carolina this fall by adding five incoming freshmen and one transfer during this spring signing period. UNC will have 14 additions to its women's squad in 2008-09 while 10 new individuals will be joining the men's squad in August.

The new recruits include Chuck Bartel, Steven Cebertowicz and Victor Leclere on the men's side and Yale transfer Brittany Iacouzze as well as Enuf Swanson and Sarah List on the women's side.

Chuck Bartel is a native of Cary, N.C. ,who graduated from Evergreen Academy in Cary on May 10, 2008 as a magna cum laude alumnus. The son of Tom and Anne Bartel, Chuck excels in the backstroke and breaststroke and also swims individual medley. Bartel is a U.S. Swimming state champion in the 200-meter breaststroke and 400-meter individual medley, holding the state record in the 200 breast. While representing the Triangle Area YMCA, Bartel finished second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:50.22 and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:04.79 at the Spring 2008 Short Course YMCA National Championships. He has gone 51.54 in the 100 back.

Steven Cebertowicz is a native of Milwaukee, Wis. He will be graduating from Nicolet High School in Glendale, Wis., on June 15, 2008. Cebertowicz is a six-time YMCA national champion and six-time National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-America. He captains both his Nicolet High School team and his Schroeder YMCA swim club. He is a 2008 Olympic Trials qualifer in the 50-meter freestyle (23.47) and 100-yard freestyle (53.53). His personal best short course times are 20.54 in the 50-yard freestyle, 44.90 i the 100-yard freestyle and 1:40.12 in the 200-yard freestyle.

Victor Leclere was born in Melun, France to Isabelle and Igor Leclere. He currently resides in Brookfield, Wis. Leclere finished sixth in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2008 French Olympic Trials. He swims with the Schroeder YMCA where his primary events are the 100 and 200 butterfly events and the 500 free. He has competed on Schroeder YMCA teams that won YMCA national titles in the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 200 free relay. Leclere also swam on 200 and 400 medley relays with hold Wisconsin state records. He is a U.S.S. Wisconsin state champion in the 100 fly and 200 fly. Leclere's personal bests are 49.96 in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:49.53 in the 200-yard butterfly, 4:32.17 in the 500-yard freestyle and 9:25.87 in the 1000-yard freestyle.

 

 

Brittany Iacouzze is a transfer from Yale who swims the freestyle and IM. She graduated from Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, N.J. in June 2007. She is the daughter of Colleen and Bill Iacouzze. As a prepster, she swam for the Eastern Express Swim Club and earned senior national qualification times in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyles and the 400 IM. At Yale, she was an honorable mention 2008 Division I Mid-Major All-America selection. She has gone 4:51 in the 500-yard free, 9:59.36 in the 1000-yard free and 16:43.93 in the 1650.

Sarah List is the daughter of former UNC All-America swimmers Mark List and Bonny Brown List, the latter the 1980 Patterson Medal winner at UNC. List hails from Ringgold, Ga., and she graduated from The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn., on May 31, 2008. She comes to UNC as a backstroker and freestyle sprinter. Her coach has been UNC alumnus Dan Flack. List is a two-time academic All-America and a team and state record holder as member of 200 and 400 medley relay squads. List has a personal best of 56.93 in the 100 back.

Enuf Swanson is a native of Conroe, Texas and the daughter of John and Linda Swanson. She graduated last month from Conroe High School. She also competes for The Woodlands Swim Team and concentrates in the 100 and 200 fly events and the 400 IM. Swanson is a 2008 Olympic Trials qualifier in the 200 fly and a U.S. Swimming senior national qualifier in the 400 IM and 100 fly. She is a two-time Texas state finalist in the 100 fly and MVP of her high school swim team in 2006 and 2007. Swanson has best times of 1:58.86 in the 200-yard butterfly and 55.91 in the 100-yard butterfly.
