Tar Heels Shut Out By UNC-Wilmington, 5-0

May 2, 2003

Box Score

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - UNC-Wilmington (34-17) defeated North Carolina (33-15 11-7 ACC), 5-0 on Friday evening at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels were not able to generate any offense after a five- day layoff, managing just three hits in the game. UNC has now lost three of its last four after losing last weekend's series at NC State. The game was delayed for about an hour in the top of the fourth inning due to inclement weather in the area.

The Seahawks got on the board with two runs in the top of the third inning. Matt Wright led off the inning with a double and scored when Jamie Hemingway singled to right field. Hemingway stole third and came around with UNC-Wilmington's second run on an error by Carolina shortstop Chad Prosser.

UNC-Wilmington starting pitcher Brad Overton pitched five plus innings and gave up just one hit to the Tar Heels before being taken out of the game in the sixth inning.

Leading 3-0 in the top of the eighth, the Seahawks added two insurance runs. With two outs, Brad Denson singled and stole second base then scored on a single to right by Chip Grawey. Grawey advanced to second on the throw to the plate and scored when Wright singled for the third time in the game.

The Tar Heels are off for almost a week before returning to action on Thursday with a game against Richmond at 5 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
