Curry Signs With Raiders

July 26, 2002

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders have signed cornerback Phillip Buchanon, their top draft pick, sixth-round pick Larry Ned and former UNC quarterback Ronald Curry, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft.

Buchanon agreed to a five-year contract on Thursday worth about $7million. A starter for the University of Miami's national championship team last season, Buchanon could make as much as $12 million if certain incentives are reached, according to his agent, David Ware. The deal includes a $4 million signing bonus for the 17th overall selection in the draft.

Buchanon could crack the starting lineup on the Raiders' aging defense this season. Cornerback Eric Allen retired earlier this month, leaving an opening next to Pro Bowl cornerback Charles Woodson.

All of Oakland's draft picks have signed and will begin practice on Friday.
