Adem Kaya is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the wrestling program at the University of North Carolina. After Kaya joined the staff midway through the 2001-02 season, he has assisted in the day-to-day Carolina wrestling operations. He works with the Tar Heels' 149- through 165-pound groups. Before coaching at UNC, Kaya was a volunteer coach at Lock Haven University, in Lock Haven, Pa., for the 2000-01 season. He helped out while completing one year of foreign language studies. A standout for the Turkish National Team from 1991-2000, Kaya won a bronze medal at the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York. He also won a gold medal in the Turkish Senior Championship in 1999 and earned a silver medal in 2000. In World Cup action, Kaya took the bronze medal in Atlanta in 1995 and placed fourth in Toronto in 1994. Kaya attended Gazi University Licence Diplome in Akara, Turkey, and received his degree in 1997. In Kaya's final year of high school, he won a gold medal at the World Cadet Championships in 1991. He graduated from Afsin High School in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, that following year. Kaya is married to his wife, Zahide. |
