Carolina Wrestling Ends Virginia Duals 2-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team won its opening match of day two at the Virginia Duals, 21-14, over Rider, but dropped a close battle to Edinboro, 23-17, to end the duals 2-2. In the Tar Heels first match against Rider, sophomore Dustin Heist (Meadville, Pa.) improved to 3-0 at the duals with a 8-3 decision over Mike Robinson at 184 pounds. Sophomores Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) and Evan Sola (Wernersville, Pa.) improved to 2-1 overall with 4-2 and 5-2 decisions over Bobby Stinson and Jason Smith, 125 and 133 pounds respectively. Also picking up victories in the opening match was senior Christopher DiGuiseppe (Holland, Pa.), junior Ryan Adams (Rock Hill, S.C.), sophomore Mark Canty (Gahanna, Ohio) and freshman Brian Baglio (York Haven, Pa.). DiGuiseppe (149) defeated Carmeron Plocus 9-3, Adams (Hwt.) downed Vinny D'Agostino 3-1, Canty (174) overcame Bob Pizzuto 5-1 and Baglio (141) was victorious over Mike Molosky 7-4. In the second match of the day versus Edinboro, the Fighting Scots edged the Tar Heels 6-4, but the Scots had a technical fall that earned them six points and moved them into the next round, eliminating Carolina from the tournament. Picking up victories for the Tar Heels were Rodrigues, Canty and Heist. Adams won on a forfeit at the heavyweight division. Rodrigues pinned Jacob Gray in 4:56 to begin the match. After dropping the next five matches, Canty picked up a victory over Nate Yetzer 9-3 and Heist had the final decision for UNC with a 3-2 decision over Alex Clemsen. Heist ended the duals with a perfect 4-0 record. Adams, Canty, Rodrigues and Canty all ended with 3-1 records to pace the Heels on the mat.
Carolina will open up Atlantic Coast Conference competition against arch rival NC State, tuesday, Jan. 14, in Raleigh, N.C. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
