Carolina Downs NC State In ACC Opener

Raleigh, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team rallied past NC State tonight, 21-13, in Raleigh, N.C. The Tar Heels improved to 3-2, 1-0 ACC on the season, while the Wolfpack fall to 1-4, 0-1 ACC. NC State began the match with three quick victories over Carolina jumping out to a 10-0 advantage. The Tar Heels responded with four consecutive victories, including a big pin by junior Ryan Adams (Rock Hill, S.C.), to earn six points and vault UNC into the lead 15-10. ACC Champion George Cintron downed UNC's Chris Rodrigues (Marietta, Ga.) at 125 pounds in a 2-1 tiebreaker thriller, to cut the Tar Heel lead to just two points, 15-13, with two matches remaining. Sophomore Evan Sola (Wernersville, Pa.) earned three more points for Carolina with a 8-1 decision over Daniel Pacitti (133 pounds) to push the lead back to five, 18-13, with one match remaining. Freshman Brian Baglio (York Haven, Pa.) picked up the final victory for UNC to ice NC State with a 4-3 decision over Ryan McCullum (141 pounds) as the Tar Heels downed the Wolfpack 21-13. "This is an intense rivalry and you can throw the record books out the window when these two schools hit the mat," said head coach Bill Lam. "I was proud of our kids and I thought they battled back after a rough start." "It's always nice to get out of Reynolds Coliseum with a victory." Carolina will compete against UNC Greensboro and Anderson College on Jan. 14, in Chapel Hill. The three team dual match will begin at 1 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium.
