Tar Heels Involved In WNBA Trade
May 1, 2003
Former Tar Heels Coretta Brown and Sylvia Crawley were part of a four-player trade Thursday in the WNBA. Brown went to the Indiana Fever along with three-time WNBA All-Star Natalie Williams, while Crawley and 2003 draft pick Gwen Jackson went to San Antonio. Brown, the leading scorer on the 2002-03 UNC squad, was the 11th pick in the WNBA Draft, held on April 25. She became the fourth Tar Heel to be selected in the draft's first round, the third in the last four years. Crawley, a senior captain on UNC's NCAA Championship team in 1994, was selected by Indiana with the seventh pick of the dispersal draft. She has spent the last three seasons with the Portland Fire, a franchise that disbanded during the offseason. In San Antonio, Crawley will rejoin another former Tar Heel, LaQuanda Barksdale. Barksdale, who has spent the last two seasons playing for Portland, was picked by the Silver Stars in the dispersal draft. Williams, the biggest name in the trade, won gold medals at the 1998 World Championships and 2000 Olympics playing for Nell Fortner, now the Fever coach. Williams ranks sixth on the WNBA's career rebounding list and is seventh with a career scoring average of 15.4 points per game. Jackson, a Tennessee standout who is headed to San Antonio with Crawley, was the sixth overall pick in the 2003 draft. Indiana is scheduled to open training camp on May 1 and will play its preseason opener at Charlotte on May 8. San Antonio will start training camp on May 3.
