Twenty University of North Carolina players headline the list of the 50 greatest Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey players of all time, announced Thursday by the ACC. UNC's representatives cover the history of the program, ranging from Bashi Buba, who played from 1975-78 and held the school records for scoring and goals until 1997, to Carrie Lingo, who earned All-America honors for the Tar Heels last season.

"I'm very proud of the large number of UNC student-athletes named to the team," said Karen Shelton, the head coach at North Carolina since 1981. "I'm particularly proud of those who played in the 70's, 80's and early 90's and helped establish a program now known as one of the best in the country."

After UNC's 20 players, Maryland placed 16 on the team, followed by Virginia with eight, Wake Forest with five and Duke with four.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the ACC is recognizing the all-time greatest athletes in conference history. Teams will be announced through August and September.

The 2002 UNC field hockey team opens the season Aug. 31 when it hosts Michigan in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Game time is noon and the event continues as Wake Forest and Iowa meet at 2:30. On Sept. 1, UNC will take on Iowa at noon and Michigan will play Wake Forest at 2:30.
