Davids Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week
Sept. 15, 2008
Illse Davids Field hockey midfielder Illse Davids played a role in five goals over the weekend and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for September 8-14, 2008. Davids helped UNC earn shutout wins over No. 11 Penn State and West Chester at the Vonnie Gros Classic to improve to 4-2 overall. On Saturday against the No. 11 Nittany Lions, Davids assisted on the second goal of the day and scored the third as UNC won 4-0. Against host West Chester on Sunday, Davids assisted on the game-winner, scored on a penalty stroke, then picked up another assist on the final goal in a 3-0 win. For the season, she ranks second on the team in goals with six and is tied for the team lead in assists with three. Other nominees: NIKKI WASHINGTON UNC junior forward Nikki Washington had her career highs for goals scored and points compiled in a game as the Tar Heels defeated 15th-ranked Santa Clara 5-0 Sunday afternoon to finish 1-0-1 in the Stanford Invitational and improve to 5-1-1 on the season. After the Tar Heels battled to a 1-1 tie with No. 3 Stanford on Friday, Washington was the catalyst for the Tar Heels on Sunday with two goals and an assist. Washington scored off a Tar Heel corner kick 55 seconds into the match. She assisted on Courtney Jones' goal to put UNC up 3-0 in the second half and then she dribbled through the Santa Clara defense minutes later to put the Tar Heels up 4-0 en route to a 5-0 win. GARRY LEWIS Senior midfielder Garry Lewis scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute of the Tar Heels' 2-1 overtime victory over NC State Friday in the ACC opener for both teams. The six-yard header off a Michael Callahan corner kick marked Lewis' first score of the season and fifth as a Tar Heel. A defensive midfielder, Lewis is a key part of a UNC defense that has allowed just three goals and owns a 0.57 goals against average on the season. TJ YATES TJ Yates threw three touchdown passes and the Tar Heels won for the first time outside North Carolina since 2002, beating Rutgers 44-12 in a nationally televised game. Yates found Hakeem Nicks on touchdown passes of 9 and 11 yards and connected on a 69-yard scoring play with Brandon Tate. Yates finished 14 of 22 for 221 yards and matched his career high with the three TD passes. Tate caught four passes for a career-best 138 yards. His 69-yard touchdown catch was the longest of his career. Nicks added six catches for 63 yards with the two TDs, tying his single-game high. EVAN WATCHEMPINO Evan Watchempino made a great first impression in the opening race of the 2008 cross country season. Watchempino captured the UNC Challenge individual title as he traversed the 8K course in 25:50.32 en route to leading the Tar Heels to the team victory. The El Dorado Hills, Calif. native, won by more than 24 seconds in his first action as a Tar Heel after transferring from UCLA where he was the team's cross country freshman of the year. LAUREN HOLESH Lauren Holesh helped lead the North Carolina women's cross country team to
the team title at the UNC Challenge as she set a new personal best in the 5K
event to claim the individual title. Holesh finished the race in 18:05
running more than 50 seconds faster than her pace at the event a year ago.
In the process, Holesh set a new 5K personal best by 13 seconds over her
time from last year's Notre Dame Invitational.
