Jim Lodes is in his third season as an assistant coach for the Tar Heels. In his first season at UNC, Carolina posted a 32-4 record including the program's first appearance in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. In 2003, he helped lead the Tar Heels to a 20-win season, despite the loss of four starters.

Lodes joined the Tar Heel staff in 2002 after compiling a career record of 276-184 (.600) as a head coach, most recently at Lees-McRae College in 2000 and 2001. In 2001, he led the Bobcats to a 25-17 overall record including regular and postseason championships in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference.

His head coaching experience at the collegiate level began in 1991 at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year for the Northeast region in 1992 and one year later guided his team to a third place finish in the Division III national tournament. From 1996 to 2000, Lodes was the head coach at SUNY Brockport.

As a player, Lodes was All-EIVA in 1987 and 1988 with Genesee Community College and an AVP Beach Volleyball player from 1988-1992. He earned USA Volleyball All-America honors in 1990 with the Rochester Volleyball Club. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports management from SUNY Brockport in 1993.
